Thappalampuliyur

Thappalampuliyur derived from ancient name “TharparanPuliyur” is 5 kms south east of Thiruvarur town ( District head quarters in Tamil Nadu state). Spread over an area of (approx 5 sq km) and with a population of over 5000 people consists of 1500+ families, this is considered as one of the biggest village in this district. This village is surrounded by sub villages viz. Vaanjoor (On the southern side), Kaariyankudi Nemmeli and Ilangachery, (On Eastern side) which is also considered to be part of this village by topography/Revenue division of the village.

Thappalampuliyur Agrahaaram consists of 4 streets ( viz. North, East, south, west) and has approx 62 houses around this place. Traditionally, in the early past all the 62 houses were occupied by Brahmin ( Maadhyama alias Vaththima sub sect), which over a period of time shrunk to approx 5 Brahmin houses to day, due to migration of families towards urban towns/cities for their livelihood. History is also available to understand that there had been migration of Brahmin community from this village to various places in Mumbai as well as in Kerala ( such as Payyanur, Nellayi, Thrissur etc) who still have their roots to Thappalampuliyur by having Sri Nithyakalyani amman and Sri Kulundalamman of this village as their Family deities. The other streets of Thappalampuliyur includes East & West Palayam Streets, Vellala Street, Etc. which accommodates various communities.

The main lively hood for villagers is agriculture (Paddy, Cereals etc) which is being cultivated in an area of 1300+ Acres. In addition to this, Non agricultural farming such as vegetables etc and also livestock maintenance are also being carried out in the village as part of their lively hood for some families. Of late Agriculture being a challenging one due to frequent drought condition on account of monsoon failure and Poor water supply in canals/rivers, people have also slowly moved on to commercial business activities in nearby Thiruvarur town.

Rich in Hindu culture and tradition, the village is totally united and respects the philosophy of “Sanathana Dhramam” thereby respecting all religion/ caste equally. The village traditionally is blessed with 6 temples ( viz. Sri Nithyakalyani amman Temple ( Sivan Temple), Sri Varadharaja Perumal Temple ( Perumal Temple), Sidhdhi vinayagar Temple, Ayyanar Temple, Sri Pidari Kulundalamman Temple and Sri Mariamman Temple Located in various directions of the village. Thanks to involvement, physical/financial support of Local/Outstation members of village , Daily Nithyappadi poojas, Special traditional functions of the all temples are being carried out in a grand manner. The Annual temple festivals are no exception to this greatness, bringing an atmosphere of happiness, Joy and tradition to the village.

As part of old tradition, the village is also blessed with a traditional “Sankara Madam” near pilliar Kovil, where in olden days great Sanyaasis from various places used to come and stay and have Bhikshavandanam in Brahmin houses. Aardhana Madam for Arutperum Vallalaar is also situated in Vellala street of this village.

It is not out of place to mention that Thappalampuliyur was a place for close association for Mahans namely Sri Sri Maha Periyava, who had stayed for in our Sankara Madam in the past and had Bhikshavnadnam in various Brahmin houses. Also it is a place where Sri Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal as well as Sri Sri Vijayendra Saraswathi Swamigal have stayed and blessed this place. In addition to this It is a great honour to this village and also villagers to mention that this was the place where great scholars like Sri Sri Krishnapremi swamigal in his early days has stayed for months together and performed Kadhakalkshepam, Sapthaham etc. In fact, as a tribute to Sri Sri Krishnapremigal swamigal, his desciple Sri Sri Muralidhara swamigal has acquired the ancient and priceless place of his stay and converted as place of worship to conduct Daily Paarayanam which is a great boon to this village.

Though traditionally the village had six ponds which acted as a great water source bodies for the village and which are attached to any one of the temples of the village, The same became dilapidated over the years due to poor attention, silt accumulation and encroachment.
This affected not only the sanctity of the ponds, but also the village water bed condition and water supply for domestic (leave alone agricultural) purposes so badly leaving the village to near drought condition. Both Local/outstation villagers jointly pitched in to the situation to take urgent action to de silt various ponds in year 2017. Accordingly two ponds { viz. Perumal Koil Kulam ( Mela Kulam) and Sivan Koil Kulam ( Kheezhakulam) were desilted in year 2017-2018 and Mariamman Koil Kulam was desilted in year 2019. The other three ponds viz. Kulundal Kulam Athikulam, and Thamarai Kulam are also there in a partially encroached and undesilted condition. These ponds also need to be attended in due course.
