HISTORY

As per the historic story of this temple, that there was a Brahmin belonging to Banaras who was cursed to take the birth of a cruel tiger, because he had “Thaila Snaanam”(oil bath} during Dwadhasi day. He was given a sacred “Mokshaa” by Sri Vyaagrapureeswarar on the Brahmin offering prayer to him by folded hands and after making “Pradhakshinam” three times.

SALIENT FEATURES

a)  As per historic calculations, the original Siva temple is approx 900 years old.

b)   The present granite structure of Lord Siva sannidhi was built by Vikrama Chozha, the great great grandson of Emperor Raja Raja Chozha, who built the famous Big temple at Thanjavur. Vikrama is son of Kulothunga Chozha I, who was the first king of the Chalukya Chozha dynasty and who inherited the throne from the medieval Chozhas.

c)    Sri Nithyakalyani Amman in this temple is facing south, which is said to very auspicious feature.

d)  There are totally eight Vinaayagar Idols in this temple which is very unique.

e)   The temple  has an age old  “sacred tree” (Sthala Vriksham) called “Kaatta Aththi”.

f)    Sri Nithyakalyani Amman is also a family Deity for many families who are living inIndiaand abroad. They periodically come to this temple with family to get the blessing of this god by offering Archana, Abhishekam and Maavilakku.

g)  It is the tradition and belief that those families who are not blessed with a child (Puthra Bhaagyam) will offer Cradle and Bangles for Sri Nithyakalyani Amman to get their wishes (of getting a child) fulfilled.

h)   For the same reason of not having Puthra Bhaagyam, in some cases they pray to Sri Nithyakalyani Amman to bless with the child. Then they bring the child to this temple and offer NEY MOZHUGUTHAL. In this process, the family enable the child to smear ghee on the floor in Sri Nithyakalyani Amman Sannathi.

There are very many proven cases in the present and past  days who have actually got their wishes fulfilled by these prayers.

Various Sannathis around Sri Nithyakalyani and Sri Vyaagrapureeswara swamy Sannathi

1.  Vinaayagar Sannathi:

The Vinaayagar in this Sannathi is facing East and one of the eight Vinaayagaas in this temple.

2.  Natarajar, Dakshinaamoorthy and “Jvara Devar” Sannathi:

Sri Nataraja moorthy of this temple is in moolasthaanam which is unique to this temple and he is facing south.

Sri Dhakshinamoorthy’s moolasthaanam in “Abhayamoorthy” style is situated in the right side of Sri Natrajamoorthy. It is a unique feature that Sri Dakshinaamoorthy is on the right hand side of Sri Vyagrapureeswarar.

“Jvara Devar” is situated in between Sri Natarajar and Sri Dhakshinaamoorthy . It is through the prayer for Jvara Devar, devotees get immense mental happiness by getting rid of all types of diseases. It is traditional practice to offer Nivedhanam to “Jvara Devar” by “Poriththa Rasam” (Boiled Rasam)

3.   “MahaLakshmi” Sannathi:

Ardhanaareeswarar statue is in moolasthaanam which is carved in the wall behind Vyaagrapureeswarar. It is under direct vision, Sri Mahalakshmi Sannathi is situated.

4.  “Subramania Swamy” Sannathi:

Sri Subramania Swamy in this temple is blessing all the devotees, who are offering prayer to him,  by seating himself facing east and having Sri Valli & Sri Deyvaanai on either side of him

5.  “Vaishnavi Durgai Amman” Sannathi:

Sri Vaishnavi Durgai Amman in this temples is giving Dharshan with four hands and Changu & Chakram, on two hands. This Sannathi is on the northern prahaaram of the temple and is also on the left side of Sri Vyaagrapureeswarar. It is the belief that Devotees can get rid of their mental worries by offering prayers to Vaishnavi Durgai Amman.

6.  “ Chandikeswarar ” Sannathi:

Sri Chandikeswarar Swamy Sannathi in this temple is located in the northern prahaaram of this temple and the swamy is facing southern side.

7.  “Ekapaatharudhrar” Sannathi:

It is greatest uniqueness of this temple, that this is the only temple in Southern part ofIndia  that Sri  Nithyakalyani  Amman sametha Sri Vyaagrapureeswara Swamy is surrounded by Apporvamoorthys like Sri Ekapaatharudhrar. This Sannathi is situated on the northern prahaaram of the temple and the swamy is facing northern side. There is a east facing Saniswara Bhagavan Sannadhi which is unique in the temple. EKa Patha Rudrar sannidhi facing north is another speciality in the temple. There is a big tank in front of the temple. The temple also has Lord Nataraja carved in granite stone. It is one of the 9 Vyagrapurams where Sage Vyagrapadar installed Lord Shiva and commissioned a temple. All the 9 villages have names ending in Puliyur.

9. “Suryan and Kaala Bhairavar ” Sannathi:

Sri Suryanarayana moorthy Sannathi is situated on northeastern side of this temple.Lotof devotees have benefitted to be free from all diseases by offering abhishekam and Prayers to this swamy on every sunday.

Sri Kaala Bhairavar Sannathi is next to Suryanarayana moorthy on the right side to him. This swamy is worshipped by all devotees to enable faster cure for  Bone fracture as well as paralysis. Normally Kaala Bhairavar is worshipped with offering of “Abhishekam” and “Vadamaalai”. Normally such offering are done late night in the temple.

As per the elderly devotees, in olden days, it was the normal practice to lock the Vyaagrapureeswara Swamy sannathi after late night Pooja and keep the key bunch in Kaalabhairavar Sannathi and offer prayer to him. It is then, the main door of the temple is locked.

9.  “Saneeswara Bhagavan ” Sannathi:

As per old Chozha Practice, there is no Navagraha Sannathi in this temple. Instead of that, we have separate Sannathi for Suryanarayana moorthy and also Saneeswara Baghavan. It is yet another uniqueness of this temple to have a separate Sannathi for Saneeswara Baghavan. This Sannathi is located on one side of Vyaagrapureeswarar and facing eastern side.

Such a location of Saneeswara Bhagvan is only in very limited temples like Thirunallaru, Thirunellikkaaval, and Thirukollikkadu.  This east facing Saneeswara Bhagavan is known as “Anugraha moorthy”.

Devotees offer Archanas on Saturdays and lighting of special lamps with Sesame (Ellu) packed in small bundles and soaked in oil.

10.“Mooththadevi (Jyeshta Devi) ” Sannathi:

This goddess is in Tamil is called “Mooththadevi” and sometimes as ”Moodhevi” . As against the normal  perception  as an insult, if called as “Moodhevi”  , this goddess Jyeshta Devi eradicates all the “wants” of in family and also enables “stress free” life for worshippers.  In some Places she is also Portrayed  as Goddess for agricultural fertility, yield and wealth.

11.“Somaaskandha Moorthy ” Sannathi:

Somaaskandamoorthy is situated nearer to Sri Nithyakalyani Amman Sannathi. This god is considered to provide all the blessings as per their wish for those who offer prayer to him.
